The team behind Beast Stalkers (2008) reunites for this psychologically and morally complex crime thriller. This time, the hero of the story isn’t the morally conflicted undercover cop, but a police informer (Nicholas Tse, in an award-winning performance) trapped between both sides of the law and the case officer (Nick Cheung) who suspects that he has gone too far in his pursuit of justice. Director Dante Lam and writer Jack Ng masterfully craft an emotionally powerful drama about crime and redemption within the shell of an explosively violent action thriller. There is no escapist entertainment to be found here; Stool Pigeon is a pessimistic, emotionally draining and consistently engrossing crime film that breathes new life into the genre.
