Before director Peter Yung made his directorial debut with this eye-opening crime drama, he had already made a documentary about Hong Kong’s real drug trade. Yung’s extensive research from the documentary greatly heightened the realism of this engrossing film, about a policeman (Pak Ying) who is unable to bring down a dangerous drug lord due to the closely linked, sometimes hostile relationship between the police, their informers and drug traffickers. Filled with intriguing details about the police’s drug enforcement efforts, the Hong Kong New Wave filmmaker creates a riveting, neorealist tragedy about the downfall of an aspiring hero who truly wanted to make a difference.
