Throughout the company's history, Milkyway Image has always been there to capture a snapshot of society at each major historical turning point. Released on the eve of Hong Kong’s handover in 1997, this dark crime comedy shows us that a seemingly minor decision can bring about two very different fates for an unlucky small-time gangster (Lau Ching-wan). However, writer-director Wai Ka-fai’s ultimate point is that no matter which way we go, we are helpless in determining our own fates and avoiding the inevitable. This feeling of impotency would become an overarching theme that year in the Milkyway universe with The Odd One Dies (1997) and The Longest Night (1998), and resurfaced in the recent cross-border production Drug War (2013).
