Director Andrew Lau, writer Manfred Wong and producer Wong Jing infused much-needed young blood into the gangster genre with this comic book adaptation. Shot in authentic locations like public estates and the crowded night streets of Causeway Bay, the film introduces a new generation of hair-dyeing, leather jacket-wearing triad members whose heroism ironically comes from staying true to the traditional code of honor and loyalty at all costs. Lau – also serving as cinematographer – employs a neo-realistic style to the film, leading his audience headfirst into this dangerous world of young criminals with his roving camera. Making loyalty and brotherhood hip again, Young and Dangerous is a cultural landmark that launched a hugely successful franchise with multiple sequels and spin-offs.
