One of the earliest gangster films in Hong Kong cinema history, director Tang Huang’s crime drama stars Wang Hao as a gangster boss who adheres to his godfather’s tradition. However, a betrayal by his mentor’s widow and children leads to a bloody battle opposite the Japanese gang. A typical gangster film combining inspirations from Western crime films with a flavor of Chinese code of loyalty, Tradition is an epic about the battle between traditions and the corrupting vices that come with modernity. Shaping the mold for future Hong Kong gangster films, Tradition is a unique crime film in the 1950s.
