Director Chang Cheh’s first gangster film follows Ren Jie (Ti Lung), a loyal gangster who takes the blame for a public brawl in order to save the gang. After returning from exile, Ren Jie discovers the gang that he used to know no longer exists. With his weapons in his hands and his loyalty in his heart, Ren Jie becomes a lone warrior in a fight for honor and vengeance. Even though Chang fills the screen with blood and violence, the film is also an engrossing drama about a dog-eat-dog world filled with beasts that only live to fulfill their desires. Chiu Kang-chien’s screenplay highly romanticized the brotherly faith between Ti Lung and John Chiang, achieving a trend-setting aesthetic.
