Kayaking / Canoeing Training Courses

Kayaking / Canoeing is a sport for all ages. It requires no complicated equipment. All you need is a paddle and a lifejacket and you will soon enjoy paddling with simple instructions. The water sports centres under the management of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department are equipped with a variety of kayaks / canoes, including single and double kayaks, rescue kayaks, sea kayaks, multi-purpose kayaks, racing kayaks (K-1), and Canadian canoes. Added to these are a wide range of structured programmes and our experienced instructors. No matter being a beginner or a professional paddler, there are always programmes suitable for you.

1-Star Award Training (1-day course)
A course specially designed for beginners. It is intended to get you started on sheltered waters and introduce to you the basic paddling strokes, whistle signals, personal gear, the relevance of lifejacket, raft-up as well as capsize training. After successful completion of the course, you may proceed to the 2-Star Award Training.
Entry requirement - Able to swim 50 metres.

2-Star Award Training (1-day course)
After learning the basic techniques of paddling, you may proceed to acquire other skills in sheltered waters including the knowledge of lifejacket, paddles and canoes, weather effect, stem rudder, raft manoeuvre and HI rescue, etc. After successful completion of the course, you may proceed to the 3-Star Award Training.
Entry requirement - Holder of 1-Star Award.

3-Star Award Training (1-day course)
The highest level of the Kayak Star Award Scheme. This is an intensive course that works on your existing skills and introduces the new techniques necessary for further advancement in proficiency and training of advanced levels. Training contents include safety awareness for canoeing, draw stroke, support stroke, individual clearance of water and HI rescue, etc. Holders of the 3-Star Award may hire a kayak / canoe for self-practice.
Entry requirement - Holder of 2-Star Award.

Elementary Kayak Clinic (1-day course)
A revision course that provides instructions for the holder of 3 Star Award or Kayak Elementary Certificate. Participants may take this chance to revise and consolidate their skills and prepare for further kayak training.
Entry Requirement - Holder of 3 Star Award or Kayak Elementary Certificate.

Racing Kayak Elementary Certificate Training (2-day course)
Fast moving but very unstable, the racing kayak, or commonly known as "K" kayak, is equipped with a rudder for steering and formally used for racing in the Olympic Games. Once you have learned paddling, you will love the challenge of it.
Entry requirement - Holder of 3-Star Award or Kayak Elementary Certificate.

Rolling Clinic (1-day course)
Rolling is an important skill that enables you to right yourself and the kayak from a capsized position so as to avoid having to handle the craft in deep water awkward, tired or dangerous conditions.
Entry requirement - Holder of 3-Star Award or Kayak Elementary Certificate.

Kayak Trip (1-day course)
Paddling out to beaches or islands inaccessible to conventional transport is a very special experience. The indented coastline, sandy beaches and towering cliffs are all to be explored. Using canoes, it is easy to get close to nature and see a lot of wildlife.
Entry requirement - Holder of Kayak 3 Star Award or Kayak Elementary Certificate or above (Some of the trips may require higher qualifications,depends on the route, please contact our staff for detail).

Proficiency Bronze Award Training (1-day course)
It is an elementary training for the Proficiency Award. This course introduces the skills and knowledge for the Kayak Proficiency Bronze Award. It covers method X for deep-water rescue, stationary and on the move support strokes, knowledge for preparing a trip and safety code, etc. After passing the assessment, you may proceed to the Proficiency Silver Award Training.
Entry requirement - Holder of 3-Star Award or Kayak Elementary Certificate.

Proficiency Silver Award Training (2-day course)
This course introduces the skills and knowledge for the Proficiency Silver Award, including Eskimo Rescue, the effect of wind, tide and current, etc. In this course, you will undergo a 15-kilometre sea tour training. After passing the assessment, you may proceed to the Proficiency Gold Award Training.
Entry requirement - Holder of Kayak Proficiency Bronze Award.

Proficiency Gold Award Training (2-day course)
This is the highest level of training for Proficiency Award. It introduces the skills and knowledge for Proficiency Gold Award, including sculling draw and support, low brace turn, map reading and use of compass, etc. In this course, you will undergo a 15-kilometre sea tour training. Participant completes the two days Kayak Proficiency Gold Award Training Course is eligible to apply for the Attendance Certificate from HKCU. The Attendance Certificate Holder is eligible to apply for one day examination on both written and practical assessment organized by HKCU or its affiliated clubs. If participant successfully passes the assessments, Kayak Proficiency Certificate will be awarded by HKCU.
Entry requirement - Holder of Kayak Proficiency Silver Award.

Elementary Canoe Lifeguard Training (Techniques) (3-day course)
This course covers rescues by kayaks and the general first-aid knowledge, which are necessary for kayak instructors. The contents of the course include an introduction of rescue kayak and relevant equipment, rescue of capsized kayak, application of CPR on a rescue kayak and rescue demonstrations. The course aims at helping participants to prepare for the Elementary Canoe Lifeguard Certificate Examination.
Entry requirement - Holder of Kayak Proficiency Gold Award or Kayak Proficiency Certificate and valid First Aid Certificate.

Elementary Canoe Life Saving Techniques Clinic (1-day course)
A revision course that provides instructions for the one who had completed elementary canoe lifeguard training course with 100% attendance rate. Participants may take this chance to practise, revise and consolidate their skills under instructor's guidance.
Entry Requirement - Complete Elementary Canoe Lifeguard Training Course (Techniques) with 100% attendance rate and valid First Aid Certificate.

Advanced Training (Techniques) (3-day course)
This course intends to refine your paddling skills in every aspect and introduces more advanced techniques and strokes to help you become a professional paddler. It also helps you to prepare for the kayak Advanced Certificate Assessment. The contents of the course include navigation rules and regulations, and hanging draw, etc. You have to undergo three sessions of sea tour training of not less than 21 kilometers each to complete the whole training course.
Entry requirement - Holder of Kayak Proficiency Gold Award or Kayak Proficiency Certificate.

Kayak Advanced Trip (1-day course)
In the course, you will undergo a 21-kilometres sea tour touring which is a prerequisite for attaining the Kayak Advanced Training (Techniques).
Entry requirement - completed Kayak Advanced Training (Techniques).
