Dinghy Sailing Training Courses

Learning to sail for the first time is great fun! Racing or cruising in foamy waves is even more fantastic! Situated at sheltered environment, our Centres provide ideal and safe sailing waters for all levels of proficiency. The five Centres offer a series of training courses, all coached by qualified and experienced instructors. So, whether you want to have a taste of sailing, learn more advanced techniques, to be a smart racer or to become an instructor, our Centres will best suit your needs. After completing the courses, you can hire a wide range of crafts at our Centres such as Topper, Pico, Laser 13, Laser XD, 420, Magno and Laser 2000. Sailing is a sport for all. Introduction to Sailing Training (2-day course)
Our standard teaching boats, "International Topper" and "Pico", are the typical boats for beginners. Through the course, you will learn the basic boat handling techniques, essential background knowledge and safety code. This is a preparatory course for proceeding to the Basic Skills Training.
Entry requirement - Able to swim 50 metres.

Basic Skills Training (4-day course)
You will learn the sailing techniques and manoeuvres as a helmsman and crew on a double-handed boat and the basic sailing theory and knowledge. The Basic Skills Certificate will be awarded to those who are competent and confident to sail a dinghy alone in light winds and can pass the examination, who may then hire crafts for practice and join training courses of higher level.
Entry requirement - Holder of Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) Level 1 Introduction to Sailing Certificate OR Successfully completed Introduction to Sailing Training Course.

Helmsman Clinic (1-day course)
A conventional and revision course that provides instructions for sailors who are holder of Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) Level 2 basic skills certificate or holder of sailing basic skills certificate. Participants may take this chance to practice their skill and broaden their knowledge about different dinghies.
Entry requirement - Holder of Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) Level 2 Basic Skills Certificate or Holder of Sailing Basic Skills Certificate.

Sailing Trip (Pico, Topper, Laser 13) (1-day course)
Cruising along the beautiful islands and bays of Tolo Channel, Long Harbour, Rocky Harbour and the southern waters of Hong Kong Island with a dinghy is fantastic. You can go anywhere without the limitations of other modes of traffic.
Entry requirement - Holder of Sailing Improving Techniques or Seamanship Certificate.

Sailing Trip (Laser XD, Magno, Laser 2000, Catamaran/ Dart 16) (1-day course)
Sailing with the designed dinghy, sailors can enjoy the joy of sailing with different dinghies and the beautiful natural environment along the coastal line.
Entry requirement - Holder of relevant Helmsman Certificate with 18 logged sailing hours as a helmsman after attaining the Certificate (excluding training hours) .

Sailing Race Clinic (2-day course)
Once you are confident of sailing your dinghy competently, the next step is to learn to race. This course introduces the racing rules, techniques and tactics, and conducts several mock races so as to test your sailing abilities.
Entry requirement - Holder of Sailing Basic Skills Certificate with 30 logged sailing hours as a helmsman after attaining the Certificate (excluding training hours).

Improving Techniques Training (5-day course)
Geared to the needs of participants who want to perfect their boat-handling and seamanship skills and learn new techniques by using our performance dinghies. This course will take full advantage of facilities and the natural environment of the waters so as to enable trainees to learn the scopes of chat work, anchoring, rope work and the use of magnetic compass. Improving Techniques Certificates will be awarded to those who have passed the examination.
Entry requirement - Holder of Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) Level 2 Basic Skills Certificate with at least 1 sailing season (9 months) experience and 80 logged sailing hours after attaining HKSF Level 2 Basic Skills Certificate (excluding training hours) OR Holder of Sailing Basic Skills Certificate with 80 logged sailing hours after attaining the Sailing Basic Skills Certificate (excluding training hours)

Laser XD Helmsman Training (2-day course)
Once you have managed the basic skills in sailing. you can experience the excitement in a performance dinghy. This course introduces the performance and characteristics of Laser dinghy. Experienced instructors will teach you the skills and techniques of handling the boat. After completing the course successfully, you will be allowed to hire the Laser dinghy for practice.
Entry requirement - Holder of Sailing Improving Techniques or Seamanship Certificate or Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) Level 3 Certificate.

Laser 2000 Helmsman Training (2-day course)
An ideal introduction to sailing with an asymmetric gennaker boat. The practical workshop will include boat preparation, land drills on asymmetric gennaker whereas the theory session will cover apparent wind sailing. Participants who have successfully completed the course will be allowed to hire the Laser 2000 dinghy for practice.
Entry requirement - Holder of Sailing Improving Techniques Certificate with 30 logged sailing hours as a helmsman after attaining the Certificate (excluding training hours).

420 Helmsman Training (4-day course)
To introduce the performances and characteristics of class 420 sailing dinghies. Experienced instructors will teach you the distinctive skills and techniques for handling the boat including the spinnaker work, trapezing skills and boat tuning. After completing the course, you will be allowed to hire the 420 dinghy for practice.
Entry requirement - Holder of Sailing Improving Techniques Certificate with 30 logged sailing hours as a helmsman after attaining the Certificate (excluding training hours).

Advanced Skills Training (5-day course)
This course covers the highest level of skills in the dinghy certificate scheme and requires participants to have an excellent standard of boat-handling and seamanship in strong winds and a broad background knowledge of the sport. It is designed to introduce to you the standards required and provide you with a range of technical sessions to improve your boat-handling, spinnaker work, trapezing, seamanship and navigation.
Entry requirement - Holder of Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) Level 3 Sailing Improving Techniques Certificate with at least 1 sailing season (9 months) experience and 80 logged sailing hours after attaining HKSF Level 3 Sailing Improving Techniques Certificate (excluding training hours) and holder of 420 Helmsman Certificate OR Holder of Sailing Improving Techniques or Seamanship Certificate with 80 logged sailing hours after attaining ¡¥Improving Techniques¡¦ or ¡¥Seamanship¡¦ Certificate (excluding training hours) and holder of 420 Helmsman Certificate.

Racing Techniques Training (5-day course)
This course covers all the essential theories and practice to help you race with confidence. It includes racing rules, boat-tuning, starts, practical sessions and tactics. You will also learn the spinnaker work and the trapezing techniques and sail some of our high performance dinghies too.
Entry requirement - Holder of Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) Level 4 Sailing Advanced Skills Certificate with at least 1 sailing season (9 months) experience and 80 logged sailing hours after attaining HKSF Level 4 Sailing Advanced Skills Certificate (excluding training hours) (Notes 2)and holder of 420 Helmsman Certificate OR Holder of Sailing Advanced Skills Certificate or Advanced Seamanship Certificate with 80 logged sailing hours after attaining Sailing Advanced Skills Certificate or Advanced Seamanship Certificate (excluding training hours) and Holder of 420 Helmsman Certificate.

Dinghy Instructor Pre-entry Assessment Clinic (2-day course)
Specially designed for those who have solid sailing experience and wish to be a dinghy instructor, this course covers all subjects of pre-entry assessment including sailing around a triangular course, sailing without rudder, tight circular course, follow my leader, recovery of crew overboard, righting a capsized dinghy and coming alongside.
Entry requirement - Holder of Sailing Advanced Skills Certificate.
