An Overview of the Hong Kong Games

Introduction to the Hong Kong Games
To further promote the "Sport for All" culture in the community, the Sports Commission has organized the Hong Kong Games biennially since 2007.  The Hong Kong Games, or "HKG" for short, is a territory-wide major multi-sport event with the 18 District Councils (DCs) as participating units.  The objectives of the HKG are to provide districts with more opportunities for sports participation, exchanges and co-operation, and to encourage active public participation in sports.  Apart from improving sporting standards at the district level, the HKG can also strengthen the public's sense of belonging to the district they live in and help promote community cohesion through facilitating communication and fostering friendship among the 18 districts.
Organiser
The 4th HKG is organised by the Sports Commission and co-ordinated by its Community Sports Committee, with the 18 DCs, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association, the Hong Kong Badminton Association, the Hong Kong Basketball Association, the Hong Kong Football Association, the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association, the Hong Kong Table Tennis Association, the Hong Kong Tennis Association and the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China as co-organisers.
Games Period and Competition Events
The 4th HKG will be held from 27 April to 2 June 2013.  Eight sports competitions will be held, namely the athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball competitions. Each DC will select the talented athletes within its own district in an open manner as its representatives to participate in the competitions.
The Prizes
There will be the "Overall Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up" prizes for each of the eight sports competitions held in the 4th HKG and the three districts accumulating the highest total points from all the eight sports competitions will be awarded the "Overall Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up of the 4th HKG" prizes respectively.  In addition, "District with the Most Gold Medals" prize will go to the district that wins the most gold medals in the events of the eight sports competitions, while the district that sends the greatest number of athletes to the 8 sports competitions will be awarded the "District with the Greatest Participation" prize to encourage participation.  The district that makes obvious progress as compared with its performance in the last HKG will be awarded the "District with the Best Progress" prize. "District with the Strongest Cheering Squad", a new prize introduced in the 4th HKG will be given to the district represented by the cheering squad with the highest overall attendance on the competition days.
Publicity and Public Participation Activities
The Organiser will launch a series of activities for community participation, with the aims of enabling more members of the public to participate in the HKG in different ways.  Through enlisting the support of local dignitaries, these activities can also encourage the districts to send more athletes to participate in the HKG.  These activities include the launching ceremony, 18 districts' pledging ceremony, countdown ceremony, exhibition, sports seminar, "Elite Athletes' Demonstration and Exchange", "Cheering Team Competition for the 18 Districts", the "Dynamic Moments Photo Contest", a grand opening ceremony, a closing cum prize presentation ceremony of the HKG, Voting for "My Favourite Sporty District" and Guessing the "Overall Champion of the 4th HKG".
