The 18 districts should select in an open manner those athletes who meet the eligibility requirements for the 2nd Hong Kong Games (HKG) as their representatives to participate in the competitions. Only those applicants meeting the eligibility requirements for the HKG and possessing proof of results recognised by the Organiser shall be accepted for selection. The applicants should submit their enrolment forms together with the proof of results to their districts by the enrolment deadline specified by the respective district. The open selection method for each competition is set out as follows:

(i) Athletics Competition
 

Athletes interested in representing their own district in the 2nd HKG will be invited through an open recruitment exercise at each district. Those with the best records in competitions recognised by the Organiser will be selected to represent their districts. The applicants should submit their enrolment forms to their districts by the enrolment deadline specified by the respective district together with the recognised proof of results obtained in the following competitions:

  1. District athletics competitions organised by the LCSD in 2008/09
  2. Hong Kong Athletics League 2008 Round 1 – Round 4
  3. Hong Kong Athletic League 2008 – Final cum Championships
  4. Hong Kong Junior Age Group Athletic Meet 2008– Round 1-3
  5. IAAF World Athletic Day and Open Meet 2008
  6. Inter-School Athletic Championships (Division 1)2007-2008
  7. TCAA Junior Athletic Championship 2008
  8. USFHK 47th Annual Athletic Meet
  9. HKAAA Open Athletic Meet 2008
  10. Hong Kong Inter-City Athletics Challenge 2008
  11. WAC Annual Athletic Challenge 2008
  12. 62nd SCAA Inter-school Athletics Meet

Only results of individual events are accepted by each district. Athletes with the best records in 100m and 400m events will be selected by each district to form teams to compete in relay events.

   
(ii) Swimming Competition
 

Athletes interested in representing their own district in the 2nd HKG will be invited through an open recruitment exercise at each district. Those with the best records in competitions recognised by the Organiser will be selected to represent their districts. The applicants should submit their enrolment forms to their districts by the enrolment deadline specified by the respective district together with the recognised proof of results obtained in the following competitions:

  1. District swimming competitions organised by the LCSD in 2008/09
  2. 4th Hong Kong International Open Swimming Championships 2008
  3. Hong Kong Age Group Long Course Swimming Championships 2008
  4. Age Group Long Course Swimming Competitions 2008
  5. Spring Master Swimming Championships 2008
  6. Summer Master Swimming Championships 2008
  7. Annual Master Swimming Championships 2008
  8. Winter Master Swimming Championships 2008
  9. 47th Hong Kong - Macau Interport Swimming Competition
  10. Inter-School Swimming Championships (Division 1) 2008/2009

Only results of individual events are accepted by each district. Athletes with the best records in 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly events will be selected by each district to form teams to compete in relay events.

   
(iii) Badminton Competition
 

A badminton selection contest should be held at each district for the HKG to select those who meet the eligibility requirements for the HKG and have outstanding performances as the representatives of the respective districts in the competitions. The applicants should submit their enrolment forms to their districts by the enrolment deadline specified by the respective district together with the recognised proof of results obtained in the following competitions:

  1. Top 4 winners of the District Badminton Competition in 2008/09 organised by the LCSD;
  2. Grade A players in any event (singles/doubles/mixed doubles) on the Hong Kong Badminton Association Grading List of Players in 2008/09;
  3. Top 8 winners of the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Hong Kong Annual Badminton Championships 2007 and 2008 – Senior and Intermediate Divisions;
  4. Top 8 winners of the divisions below 19 years of age in the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Hong Kong Youth Badminton Championships 2007 and 2008 (i.e. Year 88 Division in the 2007 Championships and Year 89-92 Division in the 2008 Championships);
  5. Members of the Hong Kong badminton team who participated in the Badminton Competition of 2007 Summer Universiade; and
  6. Top 8 winners of All Hong Kong Schools Jing Ying Badminton Tournament 2007 – 2008.
Individual events
: Men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles
Quota
: 16 players/teams for each event (4 players/teams from the winners/ winning teams of the District Badminton Competition organised by the LCSD and the remaining 12 players/teams from those meeting the above recognised eligibility requirements). If the number of applicants meeting the requirements exceeds the quota, the respective district may increase the quota.

Winners of individual events will be selected by districts to form teams to compete in team events.

   
(iv) Table Tennis Competition
 

A table tennis selection contest should be held at each district to select those who meet the eligibility requirements for the HKG and have outstanding performances as the representatives of the respective districts in the competitions. The applicants should submit their enrolment forms to their districts by the enrolment deadline specified by the respective district together with the recognised proof of results obtained in the following competitions:

  1. Top 4 winners of the District Table Tennis Competition in 2008/09 organised by the LCSD;
  2. 4 Ranking Players of the Hong Kong Table Tennis Association (the 4 highest-ranking applicants/teams among those who have submitted applications to the respective district; and for doubles events, the ranking is determined by the two players’ total positions on the Ranking List. All rankings shall follow those on the latest Ranking List as at the enrolment deadline for the selection contest at the respective district);
  3. Members of the Hong Kong table tennis team who participated in the Table Tennis Competition of 2007 Summer Universiade;
  4. Top 8 winners of All Hong Kong Schools Jing Ying Table Tennis Tournament 2007-2008.
Individual events
: Men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles
Quota
: 16 players/teams for each event (4 players/teams from the winners/ winning teams of the District Table Tennis Competition organised by the LCSD and 4 Ranking Players/Teams of the Hong Kong Table Tennis Association while the remaining 8 players/teams are selected from those meeting the above recognised eligibility requirements). If the number of applicants meeting the requirements exceeds the quota, the respective district may increase the quota.

Winners of individual events will be selected by districts to form teams to compete in team events.

   
(v) Tennis Competition
 

Selection of athletes as representatives of their own districts in the competition will be made through the District Tennis Competition organised by the LCSD. The athletes who have achieved the best results in each division and met the eligibility requirements for the HKG will be picked. If the number of the age groups is more than one for any event, the best 2 players/teams from each age group meeting the eligibility requirements for the HKG will compete in another round of matches and the final winner will represent the district in the competition. Winners of individual events will be selected by districts to form teams to compete in team events.

For the above 5 sports competitions events (namely athletics, swimming, badminton, table tennis and tennis competitions), if districts fail to select through the selection methods above any athletes meeting the eligibility requirements for the HKG as their representatives in the competitions, a contest open to all those meeting the eligibility requirements for the HKG will be held. The quota for each event is 8, which will be allotted by balloting.
   
(vi) Basketball Competition
  An open basketball selection contest should be held at each district for the HKG to select teams that meet the eligibility requirements for the HKG and have outstanding performance as representatives of the respective districts in the competition. The quota for men's and women's divisions will be 8 teams each, 2 of which are the best 2 teams in the District Basketball Competition organised by the LCSD with at least 6 members meeting the eligibility requirements for the HKG. The quota for the remaining 6 teams will be allotted by balloting. The winning team will represent the respective district to participate in the HKG. Athletes meeting the eligibility requirements for the HKG should submit the enrolment forms to their districts by the date specified by the respective district.
