With the re-commissioning of the Bun Scrambling Competition in 2005, the "Bun Carnival 2006" held in last year was well received by the public. The wide range of events such as the selection of finalists for the bun scrambling, the climbing play-in and carnival as well as the bun scrambling competition not only attracted more than 6 000 participants, but also attracted tens of thousands of local and overseas visitors. Among these events, the "Bun Scrambling Competition" has become the focus of the community, receiving extensive coverage from the local and overseas media.

In view of this, the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will continue to stage the "Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of HKSAR - Bun Carnival 2007" from 12 May to 25 May 2007. The event is presented in association with the Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, the Cheung Chau Rural Committee, the Islands District Office and the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, and sponsored by the Islands District Council and 3D-GOLD Jewellery. The organisation authority will preserve the format of the bun scrambling event last year. For example, Climbing Carnival will still be held so as to offer a chance for the public to have fun with climbing bun tower and climbing training will also be arranged for the participants of the Bun Scrambling Competition. Regarding Bun Scrambling Competition, in addition to individual events, the organisation authority will continue to hold invitation relay. In order to make the activity more attractive, the following new elements will be added:

  • Bun Tower: The "genuine buns" of the bun tower will be substituted by "replica buns" which are modeled on the "genuine buns" in shape and weight;
  • Climbing Carnival: Game Stalls on the themes of Bun Festival and climbing sports will be provided; and
  • Invitation Relay: The climbing athletes of the neighbouring districts and Cheung Chau local organisations will be invited to take part in the Invitation Relay

The three stages for the Bun Scrambling Competition are training on bun tower climbing, selection of the finalists for the competition and the final competition. Healthy and physically fit people aged 18 or above are welcome to join the competition. Please refer to the prospectus for details of the events.

The 12 participants with the highest scores in the Selection will be invited to take part in the final competition at 11:30pm on May 24 to 12:30 am on May 25. The finalists who grab the largest numbers of buns with the highest scores within the specified time and area will be the winners.

In addition to the Bun Scrambling Competition, a Climbing Carnival will be staged on May 20 during which there will be demonstrations on the techniques of bun tower climbing by the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union. Apart from the games stalls and variety show, visitors may also enjoy the fun of bun tower climbing by participating in the Bun Tower Climbing Challenge.
