| Regular participation in sports activities is beneficial to students, as it helps to relieve their learning pressure, improve their learning efficiency and enhance their physical fitness. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) introduced the School Sports Programme (SSP) in 2001 with the objective of encouraging primary, secondary and special school students to participate in sports activities during their leisure time. The SSP consists of seven subsidiary programmes: Sport Education Programme, Easy Sport Programme, Sport Captain Programme, Outreach Coaching Programme, Joint Schools Sports Training Programme, Badges Award Scheme and sportACT Award Scheme. During the 2006/07 academic year, about 520 000 students from 955 schools took part in the activities organised under the programmes.
The sportACT Award Scheme is a new subsidiary programme under
the SSP launched by the LCSD in October 2006. Its main objective
is to encourage students to participate in sports activities
regularly with support from schools and to develop it as a
life-long habit. Since its launching, the Scheme has been
very well received by schools. To further sustain the Scheme
and to strengthen the culture of "one student, one sport"
on campus, the LCSD launched a new sportFIT Award Scheme
in November 2007. The sportFIT Award Scheme is built on the
sportACT Award Scheme with the School Physical Fitness Award
Scheme (SPFAS) jointly organised by the Education Bureau,
the Hong Kong Childhealth Foundation and the Physical Fitness
Association of Hong Kong, China incorporated into it. Under
the sportFIT Award Scheme, students who meet the award requirements
of both the sportACT Award Scheme and SPFAS will be given
further recognition and awards. Moreover, the LCSD is working
in tandem with the Department of Health in promoting its "EatSmart@school.hk"
Campaign. Students are encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle
by having a balanced diet as well as participating in sports
activities regularly.
On 21 November 2007, the LCSD launched the sportFIT Award
Scheme cum sportACT Month as a catalyst to motivate schools
and students to continue to take part actively in various
activities to be organised under the SSP in the coming year.
I am confident that, with the concerted effort and support
of the Government, principals, teachers, parents and students,
we would see a new generation growing up healthily, full of
energy and vigour.

Director of Leisure and Cultural Services
