2012 has been an eventual year with the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the holding of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in London from July to September. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) held Sport For All Day 2012 on 5 August (Sunday) to celebrate the anniversary of the HKSAR with the people as well as give support to the Hong Kong athletes taking part in the Games.
Held by the LCSD annually since 2009 to support China's National Fitness Day, Sport For All Day aims to encourage the public to develop a regular habit of physical exercise and is part of continuous efforts to promote the ˇ§Sport for Allˇ¨ principle in the community.
Sport For All Day saw an array of free recreational programmes in designated sports centres run by the LCSD in the 18 districts of Hong Kong. They included sports demonstrations, fitness corners, parent-child sports programmes and various types of sports participation activities to attract people from different age groups to participate in all kinds of healthy physical activities. The LCSD made various recreational and sports facilities available for free use by the people on the day for them to enjoy the fun of sport.
Sport For All Day 2011, with fitness walking as its theme and carrying the motto ˇ§Be Smart and Healthy. Letˇ¦s Take a Brisk Walk Dailyˇ¨, was highly popular, attracting more than 200 000 participants. Launch ceremonies were held at walking tracks in each of the 18 districts, followed by healthy walks involving some 1 000 people at the Ma On Shan Promenade, Hong Kong Park, Po Kong Village Road Park and Tsing Yi Park on the same day to foster a ˇ§Sport for Allˇ¨ culture in the community.
To tie in with the Sport For All Day 2012 theme related to the London Olympics, one Olympic sport was adopted by each of the 18 districts for promotion so as to create an ambience linked to the Olympics and to rally the support of people all over the territory for Hong Kong athletes participating in the Games.
Sport For All Day was launched with a ceremony at 3pm at Siu Sai Wan Sports Centre to highlight the importance of performing physical exercise and encourage citizens to engage in sports and other physical activities with a healthy lifestyle as the goal.
