2010.03.20   Speech by the Acting Deputy Director (Leisure Services) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Mr Paul Cheung, at the Prize Presentation Ceremony of Hong Kong Flower Show 2010

Sir David, Mr Yau, Miss Lau, Dr Tang, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the Prize Presentation Ceremony of the Hong Kong Flower Show 2010.

This is the eleventh year for the holding of the Hong Kong Flower Show by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The fact that annually over 500 000 citizens are attracted to the Flower Show sufficiently reveals the great interest of the community in environmental greening and in cultivation of flowers. As "Fairy Tales of Flowers" is the theme of this year's Show, visitors will not only be able to appreciate the theme flower, Cineraria, in its radiant colours, but will also enjoy the refined floral displays and garden plot designs portraying the theme of fairy tales presented by local, Mainland as well as overseas horticultural organisations.

To enhance the knowledge of the public in greening and their enjoyment in gardening, while attracting greater public participation in community greening efforts so that contributions could be made to the greening of Hong Kong, we have staged a series of activities including the floral and plant exhibit competition which is very much welcomed by horticulture enthusiasts.

The competition this year, comprising 15 sections subdivided into a total of 92 classes, has been met with very enthusiastic response. All of the entries are of great ornamental value, hence pleasing to the eyes, and are of very high standard. For the garden plot competition, all contesting organisations this year have shown forth superb landscaping skills, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the beautiful vistas of gardens and woods.

The successful staging of the different competitions in this Show relies enormously on the extensive support of the public, the participating organisations and exhibitors, judges and the sponsor, Yuen Yuen Institute. On behalf of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, may I offer my sincere thanks to everybody concerned and my congratulations to all the prize winners. I hope that all will lend support to the Hong Kong Flower Show and join hands in the promotion of environmental greening.

Thank you.
