The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present a "Lecture Demonstration Series on Romanticism & German Lieder" in September. Professor Chan Wing-wah will be the speaker and acclaimed tenor David Quah and pianist Timmy Tsang will give demonstrations in the lecture series.
German lieder are generally songs that were written from the mid to late 19th century using German poetry in music. Songs with simple melodies accompanied by piano were composed and often used to express the emotions of poets or for narration. The singing style of German lieder is more natural and approachable, which is completely different from the style used in opera. The lecture series will examine the historical background and relationship between romanticism and German lieder. Professsor Chan has selected two song cycles composed by Schubert and one song cycle by Schumann to demonstrate and examine romanticism in German lieder.

Professor Chan has been the Chairman of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong since 1994 and was invited to become a member of the Chinese Musicians Association in 2009. He has been a Professor of Music and the Chairman of the Department of Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Internationally he has received first prize in the International Double Reed Society Composition Contest in the US, the 20th Century Masterpiece Award from the China Culture Promotion Society in Beijing and the Yoshiro Irino Memorial Prize in Japan.
All lectures will be conducted in Cantonese and will start at 7.30pm in the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum. Tickets for each lecture are priced at $50 and are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis). To allow audiences to understand and appreciate German lieder, the LCSD will present "Vocal Recital by David Quah (Tenor): Schubert's 'Die Sch?ne Mllerin'", at 8pm on October 3 (Friday) in the Theatre of Hong Kong City Hall in connection with the lecture demonstration series.
