The Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble will stage two concerts in February to open the Lingnan Music Series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
The Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble was formed in the 1970s. The ensemble was a regular performing group in the outdoor entertainment programmes of the former Hong Kong Urban Council. Its members are local enthusiasts in Chaozhou music, most of whom have 20 to 30 years of performing experience. These veterans are now serving as coaches or music teachers to help groom younger musicians. Apart from performing as an accompanying ensemble for Chaozhou opera troupes in Hong Kong, the ensemble has also toured Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. The musicians are in close contact with famous virtuosi in Chaozhou and Shantou, practising with them and actively promoting cultural exchange in a bid to keep the art form thriving.
