The Climbing Carnival of the 2013 Bun Carnival was held at the soccer pitch, Pak Tai Temple Playground, Cheung Chau today (May 12) where members of the public experienced the fun of climbing the bun tower as well as the traditions of the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival.
After making on-site applications for "Bun Tower Climbing Play-in", carnival participants climbed the 14-metre-tall bun tower set up for the Bun Scrambling Competition to be held in the evening of May 17. They also made wishes on the "Wishing Bun Tower" erected at the venue and looked forward to realising them.
In today's carnival, eight teams from local tertiary institutions, government departments, public utilities and commercial and industrial organisations tried their best to compete in the invitation relays. The championship went to the team from Sport Climbing Club, the Hong Kong University Students' Union.
Festival-goers also had fun at games stalls, handicrafts, variety shows as well as the displays of winning works from the student colouring and drawing competitions. They also learned more about the technical and safety measures of bun tower climbing during the bun tower climbing and briefing by the China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union.
The 2013 Bun Carnival is one of the events under the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign. Twelve finalists comprising nine men and three women will compete for individual awards in the Bun Scrambling Competition, the grand finale of the 2013 Bun Carnival, to be held from 11.30pm on May 17 to 12.25am on May 18 at the soccer pitch, Pak Tai Temple Playground, Cheung Chau. A new award – "Full Pockets of Lucky Buns" – will be introduced this year to commend the participant who grabs the most buns.
Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the 2013 Bun Carnival is presented with the support of the Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, the Cheung Chau Rural Committee, the Islands District Office and the China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union, and sponsored by Lukfook Jewellery, A.S.
