2012.09.10   Lifeguard services at Tung Chung Swimming Pool

The Standard
The Editor

Dear Editor,

I refer to the letter titled “Trials tragedy at pool”, (September 5) by Tshung Chang concerning an incident that occurred on September 2 at Tung Chung Swimming Pool. I would like to clarify that, contrary to what was noted in the letter, the lifeguards at the pool did use an automated external defibrillator (AED) during the rescue operation.

At around 10am that day, a male swimmer was found unconscious in the main pool during the cross-harbour swimming trials organised by the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association and our lifeguards immediately initiated the rescue operation for the swimmer.

After lifting him onto the pool deck, the lifeguards not only performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but also used the AED in the attempt to revive his heartbeat.

The LCSD attaches great importance to the safety of swimmers and we are fully aware of the important role played by AEDs in rescue operations. We have therefore installed AEDs in all LCSD swimming pools, bathing beaches and water sports centres since last year.

Next year, we are going to extend the provision of AEDs to other venues such as sports grounds, sports centres, tennis courts, soccer pitches and major parks. We will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure and enhance the provision of emergency equipment for our sports and leisure facilities.

Yours faithfully,

Ms Winnie Chan Pui-ching
