2012.06.13   Annual maintenance arrangement for Morrison Hill Swimming Pool

South China Morning Post
The Editor

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to respond to the letter by Francesco Sacconi (“Shutdown of pool needs a rethink”, June 8) with regard to the annual maintenance arrangement for the Morrison Hill Swimming Pool.

During the winter months (November to March every year), the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) makes available its heated swimming pools for swimming when the non-heated swimming pools are closed for annual maintenance. As such, the annual maintenance of all heated swimming pools has to be scheduled in early or late summer so that they could be opened during the rest of the year.

For the above reasons, the Morrison Hill Swimming Pool (MHSP), one of the four heated swimming pools on Hong Kong Island which remain open in the peak summer months and during winter months, is normally closed for annual maintenance in May and June so as to minimize the inconvenience caused to swimmers during the swimming peak season and winter months. Rescheduling the annual maintenance to September and October will clash with the closure of other heated pools on Hong Kong Island.

During the closure of MHSP, swimmers can make use of the other six LCSD swimming pools on the Hong Kong Island such as the Victoria Park Swimming Pool, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Swimming Pool and Kennedy Town Swimming Pool.

To ensure public safety and maintain service standard, LCSD cannot do away with the annual maintenance of individual swimming pools. While we have tried to schedule the works for MHSP during the non-peak summer months, we would keep the annual maintenance programmes of our swimming pools under review with a view to maximizing their opening time and minimizing the inconvenience caused to swimmers.

Yours faithfully,

(Melissa Yick Sau-ping)
