Active Living Charter

Preface

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government launched the 'Healthy Living into the 21st Century' Campaign in 1998 to promote healthy lifestyle. 'Healthy Living Survey' is one of the main components of the campaign. The survey was commissioned by the Department of Health and carried out by the Department of Community Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. The scope of the survey covered physical, psychological and environmental health.

From the survey, we know that Hong Kong people have low physical activity level which will have a negative impact on health.

'Active Living Charter'

The Department of Health and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department jointly organized the 'Healthy Exercise for All Campaign'. The highlight of the Campaign is the 'ACTIVE LIVING CHARTER'. It was set up with a view to pooling efforts in the society for a better understanding of the benefits of exercise and promoting 'Healthy Daily Exercise for All'.

In April 2000, the Department of Health has sent letters to medical institutions, professional groups, tertiary education institutes, corporate and voluntary agencies to invite them to becoming 'Active Living Charter' Signatories. Invitations were also made to all kindergartens, primary and secondary schools through the Education Department.

Up to now, there are 246 'Active Living Charter' Signatories. The 'Active Living Charter' Signing Ceremony was held in 22 October 2000 at the Tai Po Waterfront Park.
