Hong Kong Film Archive

The Hong Kong Film Archive celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2011 and organised the Glamour Everlasting exhibition and The Best From the Archive Collection screenings from January to February 2011. Other major thematic exhibitions organised during the year included A Creative Journey with Lung Kong and Capturing Light And Shadow: A Tribute to Two Master Cinematographers.

The Hong Kong Film Archive celebrated its 10th anniversary with the nostalgic Glamour Everlasting exhibition featuring an array of items in the form of photos of old film stars, film awards and costumes.
The Capturing Light and Shadow - A Tribute to Two Master Cinematographers retrospective exhibition highlighted the achievements of two outstanding Hong Kong cinematographers Ho Look-ying and Bill Wong.

The Film Archive, with facilities including a cinema, an exhibition hall, a resource centre and four temperature-controlled collection stores, continues to acquire, preserve, catalogue and document Hong Kong films and related materials. It now has 9 891 films and 1 049 827 allied items, mainly through donations and loans.

Major acquisitions included 96 film titles from the 1950s to 2000s from the Orange Sky Golden Harvest Entertainment Company and more than 700 items of film related materials from the 1930s to the 1950s from collector Mr James Wong.

Major conservation projects included the second phase reconstruction of Fei Mu's Confucius (1940) and a new restoration project of Colourful Youth (1966). Several publications, including Fei Mu's Confucius, Hong Kong Filmography Volume VI, The Mission: Sun Luen Film, One for All: The Union Film Spirit were released during the year.

The Archive attracted about 252 000 visitors over the year.

Film and Video Programmes

The Film Programmes Office works to promote a film appreciation culture in Hong Kong. In 2010-11, the Office organised a variety of very well-received film and video programmes and seminars, enabling local audiences to appreciate international cinema and experience diverse cultural activities.

Highlights of the year included the International Children's Film Carnival 2010, Chinese Film Panorama 2010, the 39th French Cinepanorama and Repertory Cinema 2010, featuring world classics by the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Other thematic programmes included Hong Kong Auteur - Lung Kong, Fei Mu - Film Poet, Restored Treasures, The Bitter Tears of Ruan Lingyu, Capturing Light and Shadow - A Tribute to Two Master Cinematographers, It was 75 Years Ago … Celebrating Cathay’s Anniversary, 60 Years of Movie Glory: From Great Wall, Feng Huang, Sun Luen to Sil-Metropole, The Kid is All Right: Remembering Bruce Lee, The Best from the Archive Collection and Morning Matinee.

Hong Kong and Mainland actors at the Opening Reception of Chinese Film Panorama 2010: A Feminine Perspective, a programme dedicated to women directors whose works reflect female sentiment.

To support major local film events, the Department sponsors the venue for the annual Hong Kong Film Awards Presentation Ceremony. It also provides funding support to the Hong Kong Arts Centre and Microwave Co Ltd to organise the annual Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards and the Microwave International New Media Arts Festival, respectively. These events encourage creative, independent productions of short films and videos and promote the media arts.
