Through the scheme, the department also subsidised National Sports Associations to organise large-scale competitions such as the Hong Kong Marathon 2002, the 2002 FIVB World Grand Prix, the Hong Kong Ladies Challenge, the 4th Asia Pacific Water Polo Invitation Tournament and the 4th HKSAR International Handball Invitation Tournament. These major international events reinforced Hong Kong's status as one of the region's leading centres for sports.
