International Museum Day 2012, Hong Kong
Museums in a Changing World: New challenges, new inspirations
Every year, museums around the world host International Museum Day (IMD) on or around 18 May, the date originally designated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977 to celebrate the significant role played by these custodians of knowledge. Since 2001, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has organised an array of art, culture and museum extension activities in mid-May every year with the aim of raising public awareness about the roles and functions of museums in society.
Our world is changing faster than ever. New technology spreads new ideas, transmits gigabytes of information, delivers news of an increasingly unstable climate – swiftly, widely, virally. The theme for IMD 2012 is Museums in a Changing World: New challenges, new inspirations. Prompting visitors to reflect on the role of museums in our rapidly evolving society and this era of new media, IMD 2012 will focus on how museums are responding to the challenges of the future and creating the basis for their own sustainable development.
The local museums and heritage organisations participating in IMD 2012 will hold special programmes on 19 and 20 May 2012. Come and join the fun! For details of IMD 2012 activities in Hong Kong, please look out for announcements from the individual museums and visit the official website.

Science Film Show :Great Migration : Race to Survive:
Migrations are ticking clocks: every day, countless animals must move or die, driven by changing seasons, and a changing climate; they are racing to reach their destination, before it's too late, to breed, feed or simply stay alive. From the ever changing Arctic ice floes to the salt pans of Botswana, trillions of creatures are compelled to journey - for the sake of their own survival and their legacy. But for animals ranging from walruses to whale sharks, zebras to orangutans, pronghorn to plankton -- every day is a race against time.
With this film provided by National Geographic Channel, we invite you to join this exciting journey.
