In order to let senior citizens gain fun through scientific experiments as well as to deepen their knowledge on health, the Hong Kong Science Museum has launched an activity namely "Healthy Elderly Laboratory Programmes". This programme will last for 1 hour 30 minutes. It covers two parts including experiment session and museum tour. They are conducted and guided by our experienced docents with content carefully designed to cater the needs and interests of participants. Visiting groups may choose the following themes:
Science in the Kitchen
Many materials found in the kitchen can become interesting science kits. For example, do you know that other than for washing dishes, we can use detergents to play a speed boat game? Have you ever heard of paper kettle? Would you like to know the secrets of red cabbage? Even things as common as eggs are good materials for many experiments. In this Elderly Laboratory Programme, participants can make use of different kinds of materials to uncover the secret of 'Science in the Kitchen'.
Senses
Human senses are generated by our five sense organs, namely, eyes, ears, mouth, nose and skin. With them, we can appreciate the charming scenery and listen to wonderful songs. But what on earth are the visual, auditory, taste and smelling senses generated? To what extent will we be affected if our senses are impaired? And how should we maintain a sensitive sense? Through models, diagrams, series of interesting experiments and guided-tours, this activity introduces you how senses are generated, the judgment error of our visual sense and sense of touch, as well as the relations between tasting and smelling sense of human beings.
