“Building Together: 160 Years of Hong Kong – French Common Heritage and Perspectives” Exhibition

The year 2008 represents a milestone in the relationship between Hong Kong and France - 160 years of joint partnership, born on 15 July 1848 when France decided to establish a consular representation in Hong Kong. Other French soon followed. The close relations between Hong Kong and France continue through the presence of around 10,000 French citizens in 2008 in Hong Kong, making it the largest French community in any Asian city.

Since the mid-19th century, Hong Kong’s continuous exposure to Western culture led to the emergence of a new culture that blends East and West with its own unique identity. This exhibition looks at the role of French architecture as a vehicle for cultural interchange and its influence on the formation of this distinctive Hong Kong identity.

This exhibition is jointly organized by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau, Antiquities and Monuments Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and the Lee Woo Sing Hong Kong History Resource Centre, Shaw College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
