"Han Dynasty Architecture in South China"

The Han dynasty was an important period in the development of traditional Chinese architecture. The use of large-scale timber-framed structures was already advanced, but craftsmen extended their knowledge and application of materials such as clay, wood, tiles and stone during this era to construct a range of impressive buildings, including imperial palaces, tombs, houses, pavilions and gardens. Because of the humid and rainy climate that prevails in southern China, very few examples of Han earth and wooden structures have survived. However, by presenting archaeological finds, and complemented by the ancient Lei Cheng Uk Han tomb which is preserved in situ next door to the exhibition gallery, this exhibition provides us with a wealth of information and a greater – and fascinating – insight into Han dynasty architecture in southern China.
