The Yau Ma Tei Theatre is a landmark of Kowloon. The only pre-World War II cinema building that still remains in the urban area of Hong Kong, the construction of building commenced in the late 1920s and opened its door as a cinema in 1930. It had served as the site where generations of Hong Kong citizens found film before closing in 1998. The Theatre was accorded a Grade 2 historic building by the Antiquities Advisory Board, which later decided to convert the building into a performing arts venue for the promotion of Cantonese opera. After extensive restoration and renovation, the Yau Ma Tei Theatre will re-open in July, 2012. In support of the building’s reopening, the Hong Kong Film Archive is presenting three opera films that had played at the Theatre, featuring some of the biggest names of Cantonese opera and Hong Kong cinema.
