Generically, the film is a hybrid. It represents the emerging post-modern culture of its time and is influenced by slapstick comedy, farce, action and kung-fu. The film focuses on the bumbling Chu Wang-li (Sammo Hung) as he attempts to avenge the death of his friend, Ma Cheonglin (Wu Ma). Later he is possessed by Cheong-lin and must accomplish his friend’s vengeance with the added challenge of returning home before sunrise or risk losing his soul forever! Supported in his endeavors by his Uncle, an elderly Taoist priest played convincingly by Lam Ching-ying and the youthful Cherie Chung as his fiancée, Wang-li faces adversity through subterfuge and deceit. Thirty years after its release the film still retains much of its original charm.
