Based on Pu Songling's Lian Suo in his classical collection of uncanny stories of the supernatural, Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio . An unruly young man is sent to study in his deserted ancestral house. He meets and falls in love with the beautiful Lian Suo, only to find out later that she is, in fact, a ghost. Things get even more complicated when an official from hell, who craves for Lian Suo, follows and threatens her with the charge of trespassing on the mortal world. Doe Ching directs this well-known ghost story with class and sensitivity, which is matched by Chan Kiyui’s elegant and stylish production design. Some of the sets, like the eerie graveyard and the derelict mansion, are almost a combination of German Expressionism and Chinese classical paintings. The film is also the second film of the luminous Lucilla You Min, whom many called the Grace Kelly of the Orient. It won the Best Art Direction Award at the 2nd Southeast Asia Film Festival. (Note: The version to be screened is dubbed into Cantonese.)
