Sunset Rendezvous starts off as a comedy, with Pak Yin’s arrival at the train station having a row with fresh graduate Cheung Ying, who later turns out to be the adopted son of her uncle. The meandering plot gradually moves towards tragedy when in the end Pak commits suicide out of despair for love and trust. Ng Wui, a filmmaker famous for romantic light comedy, delivers an unexpected film noir, aptly described by the English title and ably aided by the stark cinematography of Ho Look-ying’s (subject of a Hong Kong Film Archive Tribute two years ago) and the restrained set design by Chan Ki-yui. The use of shades and shadows reflects the aggravations and grieves the character suffers and the struggle with her own destiny.
