Chinese New Year films have been an integral part of our most festive season since the early 20th century. These films, whether we consider them as a cinematic genre or simply holiday entertainment, have always been marked by the comic dimension, with joyous mise-en-scène and feel-good atmosphere.

Their timely release during the season when we bid farewell to the passing year and extend welcome to a new one have provide film companies, filmmakers and audiences alike a chance to revitalize themselves, assuming an indispensable role in our seasonal ritual. Such a tradition is an animation of the close relationship between the cinematic form, the culture of film exhibition and social practices. This program presents five films from the 1960s to the late 1980s, covering a span of over 20 years, most of the titles premiering on New Year's Eve. Showcasing different comic journeys of dreams, money, treasure and love, these films help us find new meanings in life through the characters' adventures towards a happy ending.
