Ernst Lubitsch’s The Love Parade (1929) was so popular in China that it was adapted to the Cantonese opera stage in the 1930s, which was made into a film in 1934, both using the Lubitsch film’s Chinese title. My Kingdom for a Husband is a remake of the earlier film. It’s a fascinating blend of Hollywood and Cantonese opera, featuring lavish Western sets, copycat European costumes and sumptuous musical numbers, animated by director Tso Kea’s remarkable miseen- scene. The film was a huge hit, spawning a sequel and inspiring a host of other “western costume” opera films.
