This is a multiple Oscar winner well known for its depiction of ruthless ambition, filtered through an intimate portrait of the theatre world. Compared to the buoyant cheerfulness of Singing in the Rain (1952) and the sorrowful melodrama of A Star is Born (1954), All About Eve offers a highly cynical view of show business. The title character, suggesting a projection of everywoman, is a seemingly innocent young fan who snakes her way into the life of an aging star, scheming to push the latter aside. Writerdirector Joseph L. Mankiewicz adapts the film from a short story based on real life, telling his tale with a complicated structure, vivid characters and witty, intelligent dialogues.
