The magic of filmmaking rests largely on our not recognizing the magic and the making. And Hollywood is the best at not letting us recognize. To its credit, most of the time we thank Hollywood for it. Singing in the Rain is a love story – between a man and a woman and between filmmakers and filmmaking. Set in 1927, when Hollywood is going through the awkward transition from silents to talkies, the film offers a romantic – not to mention very funny –take on the troubles and travails of filmmaking. The great Gene Kelly not only sings, dances, choreographs but also co-directs, taking full advantage of working at MGM during a period of amazing creativity at the studio. Singing in the Rain , ironically not a big hit when first released, is now considered by many as one of the greatest films ever and the best musical ever, topping, for example, American Film Institute's list of musicals.
