Day for Night is a love story – the story of director Francois Truffaut's love affair with movies. Truffaut is a romantic and he portrays the art of producing art (even though the film being made, Meet Pamela , is not likely to be very artistic) as a highly condensed version of life, complete with its own reality and metaphors. At once funny and engrossing, the film delivers a varied gamut of situations: life and death, love and marriage, breakups and reconciliations, arguments and agreements, realities and simulations... It also presents a complicated web of references to cinema, from the artificial process that fools the audience into believing day is night to the French's fascination with things Hollywood (the French title La nuit americaine ) to the masterpiece Citizen Kane (1941) to the role of film critics to the Victorine Studio in Nice, where it was shot and where movies had been produced since the silent era.The film also features Truffaut himself as the fictional film's director, his favorite actor and alter ego Jean-Pierre Leaud, the luminously beautiful Jacqueline Bisset in her prime, the European stars Jean-Pierre Aumont and Valentina Cortesse, and a young Nathalie Baye before she made it big.
