When Wong Kar-wai decided to adapt Jin Yong’s The Eagle Shooting Heroes with some of Hong Kong’s biggest stars, no one had expected the auteur to transform a beloved wuxia epic into an avant-garde meditation on memory, loss and unrequited love. Ashes of Time deviates entirely from the novel’s plot, telling the untold story of swordsmen Ouyang Feng (Leslie Cheung) and Huang Yaoshi (Tony Leung Ka-fai). In Wong’s romanticized take of the violent wuxia world, characters are driven and tormented by love (and lost loves) above all else. The filmmaker’s audacious approach to the genre - from its disjointed narrative to fight scenes that emphasize motion rather than movements - divided audiences at the time, but it remains as one of Wong’s most memorable - and debated - works to date.
