Playing an ex-con who breaks the law again for his children, Ng Cho-fan leads a star-studded cast in this powerful drama about a wronged man’s obstacle-fraught reunion with his children, alongside Cheung Ying as the decent and kind teacher, Kong Suet as the neighbouring young woman who is vulnerable to all the gravest dangers associated with cohabitating with gamblers and procuresses. Yet it’s Shek Sau as the teenaged son who steals the show. A natural talent, the 13- year-old Shek inhabits the character’s skin, developing the role with his subtle mannerisms and playing it to the full with poise and maturity beyond his years. Playing against Ng’s fiery character, Kong the refined but fragile beauty and Cheung the perfect gentleman, Shek’s is the only character who follows his heart and restores harmony to the family when lies are sowing the seeds of mistrust and misunderstanding, and the young actor rose to the occasion and delivered a fine, nuanced performance.
