On the stage, he makes the audience laugh as a Cantonese Opera performer. Off the stage, he undergoes constant hardships in the name of a better life for his two sons. Echoing the theme of parental sacrifice in Ng Wui’s Story of Father and Son (1954), Parents’ Heart follows the story of Lei (Ma Si-tsang), an opera performer who sacrifices everything for his children. However, what happens when reality doesn’t live up to his expectations? Cantonese Opera performer Ma Si-tsang gives a heartrending performance as a father who devotes much of his humble, dignified life to caring for his children. From the simple, heartbreaking story to Lei’s moving final scene, Parents’ Heart is considered the peak of director Chun Kim’s directorial career.
