It was 1991 and Hong Kong was ready for a new hero. Director Tsui Hark obliged by reviving Wong Fei-hung with a facelift, putting Jet Li in the Master’s well-worn and immense shoes. Li not so much as rises to the occasion than transforms and elevates it, his command performance delivering a Master Wong much younger than Kwan Tak-hing’s but much more mature than Jackie Chan’s, at once youthful and stoic, yet not without a deadpan affinity for the tongue-in-cheek. And with Tsui’s masterful choreography of cinematic elements, the Wong Fei-hung myth is taken to new heights, not to mention international reach.
