Director Derek Yee breathed new life into the melodrama genre with this 1993 surprise box office hit, also the winner of six Hong Kong Film Awards. Lau Ching-wan earned his first Best Actor nomination as Kit, a jazz musician down on his luck living in a rundown flat. His life is changed for the better when he meets Min (Anita Yuen), an eternal optimist who can see the best in every situation – even when she's facing certain death. Loosely based on the Shaw Brothers Studios classic Love without End (1961), Yee' s film also has musical elements and a star-crossed romance at its core. However, it also stands apart from its genre counterparts by ending with a surprisingly life-affirming message: If death is the worst thing to happen in life, then how difficult can life be?
