Life is never fair for the heroes of a melodrama, and the lovers of Evan Yang’s heartbreaking romance are no exception. Yu Li-ying (Grace Chang) decides to marry Shen Wei-ming (Kelly Lai Chen) despite his lung-related illness. Sunny skies seem to be on the way when Wai-ming miraculously beats his disease, only for them to fall victim to the cruelties of life. Yang’s affecting romance isn’t weighted down by wordy confessions of love. Instead, the writer-director moves us with tender scenes of the lovers’ everyday lives. The film may end with a tragic conclusion, but it also convinces us that love can transcend life and death. The heart-shattering final scene alone will show you why Grace Chang has called Forever Yours her favorite film.
