Decades before Sex and the City (1998-2004) defined how a whole generation of women view matters of the heart in the metropolis, writer Cheng Wai and director Doe Ching explored sisterhood, marriage and the 1950s dating scene in this heartwarming urban comedy. Four of the greatest starlets of Hong Kong’s Mandarin cinema era co-star as the four daughters of the widowed Mr. Sun: The traditional, leader-like eldest daughter Hilda (Mu Hong), the promiscuous second daughter Helen (Julie Yeh Feng), the spunky third daughter Hedy (Jeannette Lin Tsui) and the adorable, marriage-hungry youngest Hazel (Soo Fung). Unlike the social realist works being made by other studios at the time, Our Sister Hedy depicts its young characters as hip, strong-willed urbanites in total control of their careers and their ideals, making Doe’s film a breath of fresh air that was truly ahead of its time.
