The clash between free-market economy and Confucian traditions is one of the defining aspects of modern China, often expressed in popular culture as scorn for the shortfalls of capitalism, such as greed and corruption. Money, a delicious comedy from the greatly renowned and influential company Union Film, traces the journey of a bag of cash – the loot from a bank robbery – from one pair of rapacious hands to another, like the title piece of paper in the German film Adventures of a Ten Mark Note (1926). The humor switches between the witty, the absurd and the physical, offering a biting examination of human nature when men and women are confronted with the chance of unearned wealth. Director Ng Wui animates the story with sure-handed intelligence, backed by uniformly great performances, especially that of veteran Lam Kwan-shan as a filthily rich miser.
