My Intimate Partners is the best known odd-couple film, so endearing and influential that its Chinese title (nan xiong nan di) becomes synonymous of the notion of buddies with radically different personalities, not to mention giving its name to the mini-genre featuring such men. The film again stars Patrick Tse Yin, paired here with Woo Fung, the former playing against type a "city bumpkin" and the latter a smart aleck. Director Chun Kim milks their relationship for drama and laughter, offering evocative comments on the emerging urban culture of Hong Kong. Much comedy is also created by the liberal interplay between internal monologues and spoken dialogues, poking fun at the schism between what's said and what's not.
