Union Film was commissioned by the Singaporean firm Cathay to produce several films for its offshoot, International Distribution. The Lone Swan is one of them and the Union crew went all the way to Japan to shoot the picture. Adapted from the semi-autobiographic work of writer Su Manshu, this is a co-production with Shochiku International, with a Japanese version opening on the same day as the Hong Kong premiere. Directed and written by Lee Sun-fung, The Lone Swan is highly formalized, with carefully textured mise-en-scene and lyrical expressions of sentiments. A work unique for Cantonese cinema.
