By 1954, several Union Film founders were actively pursuing different ventures, forming new companies and making films with interested parties. The Cuckoo is a production of Chun Kim's Artland Films, commissioned by Singapore's Kong Ngee organisation, which later established its own production arm with Chun. Based on a popular airwave novel by Ngai Mun, the film is about a maiden cursed with a life of misfortune and hardship. Chun takes an obligatory stance against feudalism, but the convictions of his Union Film work are missing. The film thrives instead on melodramatic twists and turns typical of radio dramas, animated by Chun's gift for storytelling.
