Mui Yee, despite her renown as an outstanding actress, had always lived under the shadow of bigger stars like fellow Union founders Pak Yin and Tsi Lo-lin. Sunrise is a vehicle of excellence for Mui, who financed the film with Xinglian, a Union affiliate. She also starred, turning in a brilliant performance in the lead role. Adapted from Cao Yu's famous play by director Lee Sun-fung, the film offers a remarkable portrayal of the business world, peopled by characters of flesh and blood.
