Lau Hark-suen is at his villainous best in this heartbreaking melodrama as the young Mr. Chin, the governor’s son. When Chin’s attempt to flirt with local maiden Mui Yi-man is met with failure, he uses his family’s wealth to buy her hand in marriage from her father (Sek Kin). To escape this arranged marriage, Mui elopes with her real fiancé Chow (Cheung Wood-yau). However, Chin discovers the lovers’ plans and devises a deadly trap to separate them. What follows is a tragedy that can only be resolved by death and murder. With his signature evil glance, Lau epitomizes the traditional melodrama villain as the wicked young Chin. Lau even gets to unleash his character’s menacing persona at Sek Kin – another legendary villain in Hong Kong cinema.
