Youth musicals were all the rage in the early 1980s. No sooner than Yeung Kuen completed the high-school/teen movie, The Daring Age, the Sing Yee Company was born, a studio he co-founded with Chow Chung to make an inspirational and

uplifting story for the youth. The exuberant spirit of youth – its energy, its passion –belies the fact that the film was directed by a middle-aged Yeung. Leslie Cheung played an aspiring jazz drummer who goes to arduous lengths to realise his dreams against all odds – a disapproving father, complaining neighbours and a mentor who is difficult to win over – and is awarded with thunderous applause for his efforts. Not to be missed are Cheung’s dazzling drumming and mesmerising vocal that was the signature of three song numbers, including the memorable theme song, ‘Swimming Upstream’.
