The wuxia film genre was at the height of its prolific and creative output in the 1960s. Hong Kong Film Company churned out some 11 wuxia series, amounting to 26 titles of critical and box-office hits. The Green-eyed Lady features a myriad of plot elements that are the canon of the wuxia film – seizing treasures, contesting for supremacy, settling blood debts and duelling for honour and glory… Suet Nei plays the title character, Shun Yu-yuen, who teams up with ‘Goldenarmed Scholar’ Sze-hung Kei (Kenneth Tsang) to avenge the deaths of ‘The Twin Swordsmen of Mount Yi’, Siu Nam and Ngok Yam-fung, murdered by Pau Yuk-shu (Yu Ming). The treacherous path of revenge and all the obstacles that pave the way are, in fact, unfolding under a thinly-veiled pretext for the budding romance between the two partners in vengeance. One feature that deserves a mention is the revamped image of Suet Nei’s swordswoman, an unusual ensemble of outfits and rebellious lock bringing a modern dose of eccentricity to her character.
